Panama!

Our whirlwind trip to Panama was an absolute explosion of adventure, culture, and those amazing, unexpected moments that make travel so addictive. From losing ourselves to salsa rhythms in the heart of Panama City to finding pure bliss on serene islands, and capping it all off with a joyous wedding celebration for dear friends – every second was a vibrant thread in a story we’ll be re-telling for years. Ready for a peek into our Panamanian escapade? ¡Vámonos!

Setting the Stage: Arrival and City Beats

Day 1: Salsa, City Lights, and That Panama City Vibe

We touched down in Panama City in the evening, and the city’s pulse was immediately infectious. After a quick check-in (pro-tip: booking a hotel near Casco Viejo can save you travel time to key spots – we often use our Chase Sapphire card for hotel bookings to rack up travel points!), we couldn’t resist diving straight into the local culture. First stop? Salsa dancing at Teatro Amador in Casco Viejo! The historic theatre, now a vibrant nightclub, was thumping with irresistible Latin rhythms. Even with our two left feet, the energy of the crowd and the live music had us attempting our best salsa moves. It was the perfect, high-energy kickoff to our adventure.

Island Escapes: Contadora & The San Blas Archipelago

Day 2: Contadora Island – A Slice of Pacific Paradise

An early start and a ferry ride whisked us away to Contadora Island, part of the Pearl Islands archipelago in the Pacific. Stepping onto its shores felt like entering a postcard. We spent the day basking under the warm Panamanian sun, swimming in the crystal-clear turquoise waters of Playa Larga and Playa Cacique, and just letting the island’s tranquility wash over us. It was such a refreshing contrast to the city’s electric hustle. If you’re looking for an easy day trip from Panama City to experience pristine beaches, Contadora is a fantastic choice. Ferries run regularly, and the journey itself is a scenic treat.

Days 4 & 5: San Blas Islands – A Caribbean Dream

Our San Blas adventure was, without a doubt, a highlight and felt like stepping into a completely different world. This archipelago of 365 islands (one for every day of the year, as the locals say!) in the Caribbean Sea is home to the indigenous Guna Yala people. We opted for a multi-day tour, which typically includes transport from Panama City (a bumpy but scenic 4×4 ride followed by a boat), accommodation in rustic cabins on one of the islands, and meals.

We spent our days island-hopping to tiny, palm-fringed sandbars, snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs teeming with colorful fish, and learning about Guna culture. The simplicity of life here, the untouched beauty of the islands, and the warmth of the Guna people made it an unforgettable experience. Evenings were spent stargazing with almost zero light pollution, listening to the gentle lapping of waves. It’s a true escape from the modern world. (Traveler’s Tip: Pack light, bring reef-safe sunscreen, and be prepared for basic amenities – the magic of San Blas is in its raw, natural beauty!)

Diving into Panama City’s Heart & History

Day 3: Markets, Cathedrals, and Casco Viejo Charm

Back in the city, we dedicated Day 3 to exploring its historic heart. We wandered through local markets, absorbing the sights and sounds of everyday Panamanian life. A visit to the magnificent Metropolitan Cathedral in Casco Viejo, with its stunning mother-of-pearl inlaid towers, was a must. We also stumbled upon the Karavan Gallery, showcasing beautiful local art. The real gem of the day was the bustling flea market at Plaza de la Independencia (Cathedral Plaza). Here, we found unique handicrafts, vibrant textiles, and indulged in some delicious street food – the empanadas were a highlight!

Day 6: The Canal, Museums, and Coastal Breezes

After our San Blas trip, we returned to Panama City for more urban exploration. We rented bikes and enjoyed a leisurely ride along the Calzada de Amador (Amador Causeway), a beautiful stretch of road connecting four small islands, offering fantastic views of the city skyline and the entrance to the Panama Canal. Next, we visited the Frank Gehry-designed BioMuseo, a strikingly colorful museum dedicated to Panama’s rich biodiversity and geological history. The exhibits were fascinating and really highlighted the country’s unique position as a land bridge between continents. To cap off the day, we headed to the Miraflores Visitor Center by the Panama Canal. Watching massive cargo ships navigate the intricate lock system was a true marvel of engineering – something you absolutely have to see to appreciate!

Day 7: Unplanned Adventures & Hidden Gems

We intentionally left Day 7 unplanned, and it turned into a wonderful day of spontaneous discovery. We revisited Casco Viejo, lingering in Plaza Bolívar, admiring the historic architecture. We then ventured into the Metropolitan Natural Park, a tropical rainforest right in the city! It was amazing to hike trails surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife, a true urban oasis. Sometimes, the best travel moments are the ones you don’t plan for.

A Celebration of Love: Ana Banana’s Big Day!

Day 8 & 9: Wedding Festivities

The primary reason for our Panamanian adventure was to celebrate the wedding of our dear friend, Ana (affectionately, Ana Banana!). The festivities kicked off on Day 8 with a wonderful welcome meet-and-greet, bringing friends and family together from all over. Day 9 was the main event – Ana’s wedding was nothing short of magical. Set against Panama’s enchanting backdrop, it was a beautiful celebration of love, friendship, and new beginnings. Seeing our friend so happy, surrounded by loved ones in such a stunning setting, was truly special.

Panama’s Culinary Scene: Our Top Bites

We couldn’t talk about Panama without mentioning the food! Throughout our journey, we indulged in the rich and diverse culinary scene.

  • Lobersteria in Casco Viejo: Hands down, some of the freshest and most delicious seafood we had. The lobster was incredible!
  • American Trade Hotel: We treated ourselves to a delightful brunch here. The ambiance is stunning, and the food matched.
  • Street Food: Don’t shy away from the local street vendors for treats like empanadas, carimañolas (yuca fritters), and fresh tropical fruit juices.
  • Geisha Coffee: Panama is famous for its Geisha coffee, one of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world. If you’re a coffee aficionado, trying a cup is a must!

Homeward Bound & Lingering Thoughts

Day 10: Reflecting on an Unforgettable Journey

With hearts full of incredible memories, amazing food, and the joy of witnessing a beautiful wedding, we boarded our flight home. Panama wasn’t just a destination; it was an experience that truly enriched us in every way. From the vibrant city life to the serene beauty of its islands and the warmth of its people, Panama delivered far beyond our expectations.

What We Missed (Next Time!): Despite our packed itinerary, there were a few things we couldn’t squeeze in, like a deeper dive into the rainforest (perhaps a tour to Gamboa) and trying our hand at paddleboarding on the causeway. They’re definitely on our list for our next visit!

Final Impressions: Our trip to Panama was a perfect testament to the beauty of blending planned excursions with spontaneous exploration. The country’s vibrant culture, stunning natural landscapes, and the incredible hospitality made this one of our most memorable adventures yet. If you’re considering a trip that offers a bit of everything – city, beach, nature, culture, and history – Panama should be high on your list!
